Installation Rules exam — quick answers

What is the Installation Rules exam?

It is a national theory exam based on SANS 10142-1 (the wiring of premises) together with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Electrical Installation Regulations. Passing it is one of the requirements to register as an accredited person (the wireman's licence) with the Department of Employment and Labour, the registration that lets you issue Certificates of Compliance.

What is the difference between Paper 1 and Paper 2?

The exam is written in two papers. Broadly, Paper 1 covers the legislation, rules and definitions (the OHS Act, the Installation Regulations and the SANS 10142-1 requirements), while Paper 2 covers the calculations and design side, such as loads, cable sizing, voltage drop and protection. You may write both papers in the same exam sitting.

What is the pass mark for the Installation Rules exam?

You need at least 50% on each paper. If you score 75% or more in a paper you are permanently exempt from rewriting that paper. The second paper must be passed within 12 months of the first, otherwise both papers must be rewritten.

Does passing the exam make me a registered electrician?

Not on its own. The Installation Rules exam is one requirement. To register as a Single-Phase Tester, Installation Electrician or Master Installation Electrician, the Department of Employment and Labour also requires the relevant trade test or qualification and practical experience. Confirm the current requirements for your route with the Department.

Which edition of SANS 10142-1 does the exam use?

The current edition is SANS 10142-1:2024 (Edition 3.2). Editions are updated from time to time, so confirm which edition applies to your exam sitting.

Are these real past exam papers?

No. Wireline uses original, exam-style practice questions written around the official study areas, not reproduced past papers or copyrighted SANS text. Calculation answers are computer-verified and references point you to the area of the code to study.
